The best students from eight Dutch conservatories took the stage at Podium Azijnfabriek in ‘s-Hertogenbosch on Saturday for the finals of the Conservatory Talent Award (CTA) 2026. During the 15th edition of the event, the Conservatory Talent Award, the Mingus Prize for composition and the Ruud Bos Challenge for arrangement were awarded. <\/strong><\/p>\n

The Conservatory Talent Award 2026 went to violinist Teddy Sicking of the Conservatory of Amsterdam, who impressed the jury and audience with a convincing performance. Jury chairman Damiano Pascarelli: “Teddy Sicking knows how to touch, surprise and deepen as a violinist: a convincing winner with an entirely unique sound and authentic signature.” <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In addition to the title, the winner receives a cash prize of \u20ac5,000, made available by the North Brabant Cultural Fund. This sum can be used for further artistic development, such as study or recording new work. In addition, the winner will perform during Jazz in Duketown 2026; on Saturday, May 23 at 18:45 on the Kerkplein in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. <\/p>\n

Mingus Prize and Ruud Bos Challenge<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Mingus Prize 2026, for the most promising composer, was awarded to Youri Traa of AMPA (Tilburg) for the composition For reasons Unknown<\/em>. The jury: “Quirky, melodically strong and surprising in rhythm: Youri Traa knows how to color his music richly and multifaceted.” <\/p>\n

The Ruud Bos Challenge 2026 went to Octavian Taborsky of the Maastricht Conservatory of Music for the arrangement The Goat. <\/em>The arrangement was performed by the Paradox Jazz Orchestra conducted by Jasper Staps with a solo by Teddy Sicking, who is also the original composer. The jury: “Octavian Taborsky shows a keen sense of construction and dares to take risks. Despite its complexity, his arrangement maintains a natural flow and fits seamlessly with the soloist.” <\/p>\n

Paradox Jazz Orchestra residency program<\/strong><\/p>\n

Winners of the Mingus Prize and the Ruud Bos Challenge have been selected for a paid residency program with the Paradox Jazz Orchestra. As Composer in Residence<\/em> and Arranger in Residence<\/em>, they will work on their development for a year, with workshops in big band technique and personal guidance from top musicians and conductor Jasper Staps. Their work will be heard at concerts of the orchestra during the year. <\/p>\n

The residency program is made possible by the North Brabant Cultural Fund and the Mingus Fund, a Named Cultural Fund for jazz and improvised music.<\/p>\n

The Conservatory Talent Award is an initiative of Jazz in Duketown, in cooperation with and made possible by the Cultuurfonds Noord-Brabant. The event offers young jazz musicians an important stage and a springboard to a professional career. <\/p>\n
